Stop Saving the Socks

I don’t know about you, but I am a saver. Not necessarily in the sense most people would think ($$), although I do that kind of saving too. I am a saver of all the good things. Like, the good sweatshirt (I need to wear that when I go out and meet friends), the fancy earrings (those are for a fun night out), the gift card (I need to use that for this kind of buy, not that kind of buy), the comfy socks (I need to wear these on a day I will notice).

My socks are the best way to explain this. I save the good socks, which means I rarely wear the good socks. If I don’t put on a pair of socks until 10 AM, I typically will not pick my favorite pair of “good” socks. What are good socks you may ask? They are the ones I love the most. They are comfortable, just thick enough, they hug my feet in all the best ways, they don’t ride up in the back and they don’t fall down my calf or ankle. My personal favorite are a pair of purple Columbia socks. If I am putting socks on at 10 AM, I would not choose to wear those, because I am saving them for a “full” day (where I put new socks on for the day at 8 AM) or a day like Saturday where I might be walking around more. Is this not a little bonkers? I walk around our place every day. I use my feet much of the day, shouldn’t my feet always get covered in the good socks? Why am I saving them for a Saturday? Further, why do I own any socks that aren’t the good socks? Why would I bother having socks that make me less enthused?

I think this is a perfect time to be thinking about this weird thing that I do. We are just starting 2024 and I think this year is going to be the year of using the good things. Wearing the new sweatshirt that is soft and I love, even when I am the only one who will see it all day. Using the gift card on any ‘ole thing, instead of something special. Wearing the fancy earrings, eating off the good plates, wearing the good socks at (GASP) 11 AM when I get ready for the day.

What am I constantly saving things for anyways? Life can be fleeting and enjoying the gifts we are given or the things we have or the people in our life is one of the best parts. In 2024, I am going to wear the good socks. I encourage anyone that checks in with me or sees me to ask me if I am wearing the good socks. I plan to THRIVE in 2024. So, I will be over here, enjoying the best socks in my drawer.

I went as far as getting this printed on a sticker to remind myself in 2024.
